Family Fishing Trips in Georgetown SC: Tips for Taking Kids on the Water

There's something about a kid reeling in their first fish that you never forget. The shriek of excitement, the wide eyes, the instant demand to "do it again" — it's one of those experiences that turns a regular day into a family memory that lasts a lifetime.

At Winyah Adventures, we run family fishing trips out of Georgetown, SC year-round, and we've seen hundreds of kids experience that moment for the first time on Winyah Bay. Over the years, we've learned what makes a kids' fishing trip go smoothly — and what can turn a fun morning into a frustrated afternoon.

Here's everything you need to know before bringing the whole family out on the water.

Pick the Right Trip Length

This is the single most important decision for a family with young kids. A 4-hour inshore trip is the sweet spot for children under 10. It's long enough to catch fish and enjoy the experience, but short enough that energy and attention spans don't run out.

Our 4-Hour Family Fun Fishing Charter is specifically designed with families in mind — up to 6 people, beginner-friendly, and paced to keep kids engaged the whole time. If you've got older kids (10+) who are already fishing enthusiasts, a 6-hour trip opens up more water and more species.

Save the full-day offshore trips for when the kids are teenagers and genuinely want a serious fishing adventure.

What Ages Are Good for a Fishing Charter?

We welcome kids of all ages, but here's a general guide:

  • Ages 4–6: Great for the experience of being on the boat. Keep expectations low on fishing and high on fun — spotting dolphins, feeling the wind, seeing fish up close.
  • Ages 7–10: This is the sweet spot. Old enough to hold a rod, reel independently, and genuinely understand what's happening. These trips are pure magic.
  • Ages 11+: Treat them like adults. They can handle longer trips, bigger gear, and more demanding techniques.

Don't count out toddlers entirely — plenty of families have brought 3-year-olds who had a blast just being on the water. Just come prepared.

What to Bring for Kids on a Fishing Charter

  • Sunscreen — and lots of it. The reflection off the water intensifies the sun significantly. Apply 30 minutes before boarding, bring a high-SPF stick for reapplication, and don't forget the tops of ears and the back of the neck.
  • Polarized sunglasses. These protect young eyes from UV and glare, and they're also incredible for spotting fish in the shallows — kids love being able to see into the water.
  • Snacks and water. Even on a 4-hour trip, hungry kids get miserable fast. Pack their favorites. Avoid anything with a strong smell that might trigger nausea on the water.
  • A light jacket. Even on warm days, it can be breezy on the bay. A windbreaker takes up almost no space and makes a huge difference in comfort.
  • Motion sickness medication if needed. For inshore trips on Winyah Bay, the water is usually calm. But if your child is prone to car sickness, it's worth giving them a children's Dramamine or a motion sickness patch the night before, just in case.
  • Change of clothes. Kids get wet. It's a fact. Bring a dry set to change into on the way home.

What to Expect When You Arrive

We depart from Georgetown Landing Marina at 432 Marina Dr in Georgetown, SC. Arrive about 15 minutes early to get settled, put on life jackets, and let the kids explore the dock. Captain Eric will walk everyone through safety basics before departure — it's brief, kid-friendly, and keeps everything smooth.

All rods, reels, bait, and tackle are provided. You don't need to bring a thing other than yourselves, food, drinks, and the gear list above.

What Fish Will We Catch?

On a family inshore trip in Georgetown, you're most likely targeting:

  • Redfish (Red Drum) — One of the most common catches in Winyah Bay. They put up a solid fight and are a great fish for kids to reel in. Limits of reds aren't unusual on a good day.
  • Flounder — A flat, fascinating-looking fish that kids love seeing. We frequently encounter flounder in the marshes and inlets around Georgetown.
  • Speckled Trout — A beautiful, fast fish that's lots of fun on light tackle.
  • Black Sea Bass — If we venture nearshore, black sea bass are a favorite with kids because they bite aggressively and are easy to catch consistently.

Depending on the season, you might also see dolphins, pelicans, osprey, and all kinds of coastal wildlife — which is honestly half the fun for younger kids.

Tips from Captain Eric for Kids' First Fishing Trip

  • Let them lead. If a kid wants to hold the rod the whole time even when nothing is biting, let them. The independence and anticipation is part of the experience.
  • Celebrate everything. A small catch deserves the same enthusiasm as a big one. The size doesn't matter — the moment does.
  • Take photos immediately. Fish go back in the water fast. Have your phone ready and snap a photo the second they hold it up. That photo becomes a treasured memory.
  • Don't overhype it. Fishing involves patience and some luck. Frame the trip as an adventure, not a guarantee of a giant catch. Then when they do land something, it's a genuine surprise.
  • Let them ask questions. Captain Eric loves talking about fish, the bay, the tides, and the ecosystem. Curious kids are welcome to ask anything — it becomes a learning experience on top of an adventure.
