Georgetown SC Fishing Charters on Winyah Bay

Inshore, nearshore, and offshore charters from Georgetown's Winyah Bay — with Captain Eric and 25+ years of local expertise.

Inshore Fishing Charters

When it comes to inshore fishing Georgetown SC, few places on the East Coast can match what Winyah Bay delivers. Our inshore charters put you on the grass flats, oyster bars, and tidal creek mouths that make this stretch of the South Carolina Lowcountry legendary among shallow-water anglers. Captain Eric runs tournament-style artificial bait techniques — working soft plastics and topwaters through the marshes the way the pros do — to put redfish, speckled trout, and flounder in the boat consistently.

A Winyah Bay fishing charter on the inshore flats is an experience in itself. You'll pole silently across skinny water, watching tailing redfish push through the spartina grass, making precision casts to moving fish. It's the kind of sight fishing that gets in your blood. The 22-foot G3 bay boat draws just inches of water, allowing us to access spots that larger boats simply can't reach — meaning less pressure and more fish.

Inshore charters run 4 or 6 hours and accommodate up to 6 anglers. Whether you want a fast-paced redfish hunt on artificial baits or a relaxed afternoon drifting live shrimp for trout, we tailor the trip to what you're after.

Nearshore Fishing Trips

Step just outside the inlet and a completely different fishery opens up. Our nearshore fishing Georgetown trips cover the 3–9 mile zone off the South Carolina coast, where structure, temperature breaks, and bait schools converge to produce explosive action on a variety of species. This is the sweet spot for anglers who want the thrill of offshore fishing without a full-day commitment.

Spanish mackerel light up the surface in spring and fall, crashing bait in frenzied schools you can spot from a distance. King mackerel move through the nearshore zone during their migrations, offering fast trolling action on big fish. False albacore — one of the hardest-fighting fish pound for pound in the Atlantic — show up in the fall and will test your tackle and your knot tying. Sharks are always nearby, circling the structure and cleaning up what the surface action leaves behind.

Nearshore trips work well as a natural add-on to an inshore morning or as a standalone adventure. If the mackerel are running, there's no better half-day on the water.

Offshore Fishing Charters

Offshore fishing Georgetown means heading out to the Gulf Stream and the blue-water edge where the real big game live. We run our 39ft Piranha center console to the Gulf Stream for full-day and multi-day offshore adventures targeting the most sought-after pelagic species in the Atlantic. When the conditions align — warm blue water, weed lines, and bait concentrations — this is world-class offshore fishing.

Mahi-mahi are the workhorse of the Gulf Stream, and when they're in, you can rack up limits quickly on productive weed lines. Wahoo provide some of the fastest, most savage strikes you'll ever experience on any fishing trip. Sailfish and blue marlin are the bucket-list species — we've had multiple releases in a single day when conditions are right. Bottom fishing for vermilion snapper, gag grouper, scamp, and red grouper rounds out the picture on ledges and hard-bottom structure.

Want to know what's hitting offshore right now? Read our June offshore fishing in Georgetown SC blog post for the latest on species and conditions. Offshore trips run 8, 12, and 16 hours depending on how far out the bite is and how long you want to be on the water.

Redfish Fishing Georgetown SC

Ask any serious inshore angler and they'll tell you: redfish are the reason they fish. Winyah Bay is consistently ranked among the East Coast's premier redfish destinations, and once you've sight-cast to a tailing red in the marsh grass, you'll understand why.

Georgetown's tidal system gives redfish anglers two distinct opportunities. Slot reds — the legal-sized fish between 15 and 23 inches — hold year-round on the flats, creek mouths, and oyster bars, feeding aggressively on shrimp, crabs, and small baitfish. Captain Eric targets these fish with precision artificial techniques: Z-Man paddle tails on light jig heads and weedless soft plastics that land softly in tight quarters. When the fish are tailing and pushing, topwater frogs and poppers produce heart-stopping explosions you'll talk about for years.

As fall rolls in and water temperatures cool, the bull reds — oversized redfish that school up in the surf and around the inlet — show up in force. These fish run 30 to 50+ inches and fight like freight trains. Bull redfish trips from September through November are among the most physically demanding and memorable fishing experiences on the entire South Carolina coast.

Shark Fishing Charters

Nothing gets the heart pounding quite like shark fishing off the South Carolina coast, and Winyah Bay puts you in the middle of some of the best action available. Our shark trips run both in the surf and in the nearshore zone, targeting species like blacktip, sandbar, spinner, and occasionally bull and tiger sharks — depending on the season and how far offshore we venture.

We've got room for up to 6 anglers on shark trips, and every piece of tackle is provided — heavy rods, beefy reels, strong leaders, and enough bait to keep the chum slick working all day. One of our most memorable trips involved a group using a drone to drop bait far beyond the breakers, and a youngster in the group ended up fighting and landing a sandbar shark that left the whole group speechless. That's the kind of experience we live to create.

Shark fishing is best in summer when water temperatures are highest and shark activity along the coast peaks. It's a great option for groups looking for big-game excitement that doesn't require an all-day offshore trip.

Flounder Gigging Georgetown SC

Flounder gigging Georgetown — there's nothing quite like it. We offer night gigging trips using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations of Lowcountry watermen. Shallow flats, a bright light, a sharp gig, and a little patience: it's simple, it's addictive, and when the flounder are laid up in the shallows, the action is fast and furious.

Our flounder gigging trips have earned a reputation as some of the best on the East Coast. We work the same grass-bottom flats and tidal channels that local gigging legends have worked for decades, reading the bottom for the subtle outline of a flatfish buried in the sand or mud. Up to 6 people can join a gigging trip, making it a fantastic evening for a family or a group of friends who want something completely different from a daytime fishing trip.

Flounder gigging season peaks from early summer through fall when flounder are most active in the shallows after dark. All equipment is provided — just bring your appetite for adventure (and maybe a cooler for the fish).

Family-Friendly Fishing Trips

One of the most common things new customers tell us is that they were nervous about bringing their kids on a fishing charter. By the end of the trip, those same kids are usually the ones begging to come back. Captain Eric has a genuine gift for making younger anglers feel confident and excited — breaking down the mechanics of casting and reeling in a way that clicks for kids of all ages.

Our 4-hour Family Fun Fishing trip was designed specifically for families. It's a relaxed, productive half-day on Winyah Bay that can accommodate up to 6 people at a flat rate of $650. No fishing experience required — everything is explained on board. We provide all rods, reels, bait, and tackle. You do not need to obtain a South Carolina fishing license; your captain's license covers every angler on the boat.

Half-day trips keep the action moving and finish before younger anglers get tired. Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks, put on sunscreen, and let us handle everything else. Browse photos from recent family trips in our gallery to get a sense of what a day on the water looks like.

What Fish Can You Catch?

Georgetown and Winyah Bay sit at a productive crossroads between the warm Gulf Stream offshore and the rich estuary system inshore. That combination means an exceptionally diverse fishery across all seasons. Here's a quick rundown of the species you can target on a Winyah Adventures charter:

  • Redfish — year-round on the flats; bull reds peak Sept–Nov
  • Speckled Trout — fall through spring peak; cooler water brings the best bite
  • Flounder — summer gigging and bottom fishing; daytime jigging too
  • Sharks — summer surf and nearshore; blacktip, sandbar, spinner, bull
  • Black Drum — spring schooling fish; great fighters on light tackle
  • Spanish & King Mackerel — spring and fall nearshore runs
  • Mahi-Mahi — summer offshore; prolific weed-line action in the Gulf Stream
  • Wahoo, Sailfish & Blue Marlin — offshore big game; summer and fall peak
  • Snapper & Grouper — bottom fishing on ledges and wrecks; vermilion, gag, scamp
  • Tarpon — seasonal summer and fall visitors; occasionally encountered near the inlet

Best Time of Year to Fish Winyah Bay

The honest answer is: there's no bad time to fish Winyah Bay. The fishery transitions beautifully through the seasons, with different target species and techniques taking center stage throughout the year. Here's a quick seasonal breakdown:

Spring (Mar – May)

Speckled trout are still very active in cool water. Redfish feed aggressively on the warming flats. Spanish mackerel show up nearshore by late April and can produce phenomenal top-water action.

Summer (Jun – Aug)

Flounder fishing and night gigging peak. Shark action is at its best. Offshore species — mahi, wahoo, sailfish — fire up. Long days and warm water make for full-day adventure trips.

Fall (Sep – Nov)

Trophy redfish time. Bull reds school in the surf and inlet in huge numbers. Trout action picks back up. King mackerel run nearshore. Arguably the most exciting inshore season of the year.

Winter (Dec – Feb)

Slower but high-quality fishing. Trout stack up in deeper creek holes and channels. Redfish continue to be targetable on sunny days. A great time for a peaceful trip without summer crowds.
